Bio
Vangalur Alagar is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He joined Concordia University as an Assistant Professor in 1975, after receiving a PhD degree in Computer Science from McGill University (1975), Canada, and a MA degree in Mathematics from (SUNY) State University of New York, Stony Brook (1971). Before arriving at SUNY as a graduate student, he was educated at Madras University, India, where he had received a BA degree in Mathematics, and a MSC degree in Mathematics with great distinction. He served as Lecturer in Mathematics at Vivekananda College, Madras (1962-1970), and at Annamalai University (1961-1962). At Concordia University, he was promoted to Associate Professor Position in 1978, a Full Professor Position in 1987, and elected as the Chair of the Computer Science department in 1991. He served as chair during 1991-1995. He took early retirement in 2001. During his tenure at Concordia, he had designed and taught a variety of courses in Algorithms, Security, and Software Engineering. His interests have been in algorithm design, languages and systems. His research in software systems emphasize rigorous software engineering approaches to their design, development, verification, and testing. Since 1976, he has been continuously receiving NSERC grant to support these research activities. His recent research centers around formal component-based software development, context-aware systems, and in particular the embedding of context in service-oriented systems, e-commerce systems, and Cyber Physical Systems.
