Computer Science & Software Engineering Home > About the Department >

Welcome! Ours is one of the oldest and largest computer science and software engineering departments in Canada . It is also among the most distinguished academic units of Concordia University . Over the years, this department has experienced tremendous growth in its faculty, student body, research programs and research facilities. We are very proud of the unique branding of our academic programs, practical and flexible with lasting foundational knowledge, matching well with the needs of today's information technology driven society.
In rapidly evolving fields like computer science and software engineering, a major challenge is to remain current and to remain a leader in these changing and developing fields. The past few years have seen the start of several new research programs with state of the art research laboratories, the creation of two new Master degrees in software engineering, and an ongoing upgrade of computing and network facilities for the benefit of all our students. The vigor of the department's research and teaching programs is evident. In the past year, there have been new initiatives to introduce undergraduate and graduate courses in emerging topics such as computer games, web services/applications and multi-core programming. Our faculty members' research work has received international recognition through numerous awards. Total external funding from government, industry and university runs to an annual level of about $3m. Over the past five years alone, the department has graduated about 1000 students at the Bachelors level, 500 students at Masters level and over 30 PhDs.
I invite you all to visit these web pages, and keep visiting them. Acquaint yourselves with the variety of academic offerings we have, with the pioneering research work of world renowned professors in areas like mathematical computing and pattern recognition, with the breadth of research areas covered by our 37 professors spanning a wide range of exciting topics - algorithms, combinatorial optimization, computational biology, software engineering, health informatics, usability, theory of computing, programming languages and compilers, image and video processing, pattern recognition, databases, semantic information processing, data mining, mobile computing, networks, 3D graphics and gaming, multimedia, natural language processing, parallel and distributed computing, scientific computing, and computer vision.
And if you wish to be with us or visit us personally, we are located in vibrant downtown Montreal !
